Streets Beach
Many, many children were running about the pool. I instantly noticed some differences compared to the the US. It appears it's perfectly acceptable to change your toddler in public from his or her swimsuit back into clothes, no problem!
We had all been warned multiple times about all the hazardous wildlife in Australia and we were on a constant lookout. The first wild creature that we came across was this wild Australian white ibis. This little dude and his friends were trying very hard to nab some crumbs from our lunch and they were quite bold about it. They finally prevailed, only not from us, but from a neighbor's table.
The kids were happy to stay at Streets Beach and did not want to leave. We practically had to drag them out of there with promises of something better...
Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast
We picked the Gold Coast to drive out to, mainly because the traffic looked a little better and it seemed like a pretty iconic spot to check out. It was about an hours drive but the kids didn't mind as everything was shiny and new to look at out the window.

The waves were quite large and we heard there was a fairly strong rip tide, so the kids were happy to stay playing in the waves up to their waists.
Immediately everyone noticed that the sand was SO fine that it almost squeaked between our toes and fingers. There was virtually no shells or plant debris, just beautiful sand. It seemed very strange to practically have this pristine beach to ourselves...on a Saturday...on a perfect day... and during summer holiday. No complaints here! 🙌

Ethan thought the sand was a perfect replica of the trampolines he's been missing at Jam Hops so he immediately started doing gymnastics on the beach.
After only a couple hours, the kids started turning a bit pink so we packed it up and went to look for a bite to eat. If you ever happen to be in the Gold Coast area, we highly recommend stopping in at Longboards Laidback Eatery and Bar.
We went out with some of Mike's co-workers and enjoyed Brisbane from an adult perspective. This trendy new nightlife area in the Howard Smith Wharves was truly breath-taking.

Bucket of Bugs
My advice to you is that if a new acquaintance offers you "bugs" as an appetizer in Brisbane, you say yes. I wasn't quite as suave as that and had to ask for clarification. A bucket of bugs is a small Bay lobster that grows to be 8-9 inches. It is more commonly known as Moreton Bay bugs. These little lobsters are cut in half length-wise and served with lemon and chilled. And yes, they were delicious. Get the bugs.
